WF ED 596
According to Penn State’s Faculty Senate,
A 500–level graduate course builds on advanced undergraduate and/or graduate courses, dealing with the frontiers of knowledge in the field. It is grounded in theories, hypotheses, and methodologies as expounded in current and/or primary literature sources. Synthesis of knowledge and independent analytical work by the student must be demonstrated. Significant interaction among students and with the instructor(s) is expected.
WF ED 596, Individual Studies, supports highly focused, independent scholar pursuits in the field of practice, workforce education and development. Enrollment in WF ED 596 as a substitute for other courses is not permitted by Passmore. Also, considered academically dishonest is the production of Individual Studies outcomes by the student that duplicate those produced in other courses in which the student is concurrently or was formerly enrolled.
There are no course completion prerequisites for enrollment in Individual Studies. Registration in this course is restricted by the Penn State Graduate School to students enrolled officially in the Graduate School, Penn State senior undergraduate students with grade point averages ≥3.50, and certain other Penn State students with grade point averages ≥3.00 who have been granted special permission to enroll through the Office of Graduate Student Programs.
Enrollment in WF ED 596, Individual Studies, with Passmore may occur only during Summer Session. However, a student may complete academic work for Individual Studies during Fall Semester, Spring Semester, or Summer Session.
Prior to the Summer Session in which the student wishes to receive academic credit AND the semester or Summer Session during which the student plans to complete work for Individual Studies, the student wishing to enroll in WF ED 596 with Passmore must propose the a plan for Individual Studies using the following form:
Individual Studies is a hybrid course delivered on the web and through face-to-face meetings, as specified in the student’s individual studies plan. Communication is managed through a private Piazza group in which all students concurrently pursuing Individual Studies participate.
Passmore will review the student’s proposal for an Individual Studies plan, negotiate any necessary changes with the student, and, if warranted, approve the proposal. The student and Passmore, then, will follow the approved plan.
Passmore and the student will conduct a formal meeting to assess the success of the individual studies’ experience to arrive at a final course grade for the student based on the student's approved plan.
Scheduled during Summer Session only(search schedule.psu.edu for available course offering).
